St. Hildegard of Bingen - Liber Divinorum Operum: Prima Pars - Prima Visio, II (7)

Liber Divinorum Operum: Prima Pars - Prima Visio, II (7) :

I set up columns as well, which contain the whole circle of the lands; [the whole world] it is the same for those winds that feathers are subjected to, they retain of course gentler winds, that by its gentleness to them they hold up stronger, even with danger they expose themselves, just as the body clothes and contains the soul, lest it expire. As indeed the breath of the soul will strengthen the body it assembles, so as to not falter, thus also the strongest of the winds made subject to it give it life, so that its office they may fittingly exercise.

Commentary:

What a profound meditation on God's creative love in the world. Yes, God's Creation is ordered and stable - these are the columns Hildegard speaks of, "for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them." (1 Sam 2:8) And yet this strength and solidity is best manifested by the feather that is blown by the strongest of winds. The winds of Creation, the creative Love of God, is constantly blowing in our souls - this is what gives us the strength to stand and the energy of life. So we should not fear even the greatest of winds - the part of that wind we retain and that keeps us aloft is always gentle. Let us allow our souls to be blown about by the creative Love of God and experience the fullness of life. As our soul invigorates and keeps our body aloft, so this wind - the Spirit of Love - keeps our soul aloft. If we allow the Creative Spirit of Love to gust about in our souls, then our whole life will be subject to Creative Love.
